Experience the Grand Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka

Discover the sacred Ramayana heritage of Sri Lanka on this carefully designed 11 Days / 10 Nights Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour with Goali Tours.

Created for travellers who want to experience a more complete Ramayana pilgrimage across Sri Lanka, this itinerary extends beyond the central hill-country sites and takes you through the northern, eastern, central and southern regions of the island.

Begin your journey in Negombo, before travelling through Chilaw and Anuradhapura towards the cultural heart of northern Sri Lanka, Jaffna.

Explore important northern Hindu pilgrimage locations including Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, Naguleswaram Temple and Keerimalai, with an optional excursion to Nainativu Island depending on weather and ferry conditions.

Continue towards Trincomalee to visit the magnificent Koneswaram Temple at Swami Rock, before travelling through the Cultural Triangle and towards Kandy.

The journey then continues into the spectacular central highlands, where you will visit the Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya and the area traditionally associated with Ashoka Vatika.

Continue south through Divurumpola, Ella, Ravana Falls and Kataragama, followed by the southern Ramayana connections at Ussangoda and Rumassala.

The journey concludes with Galle, Bentota, Kelaniya and Colombo, giving you an opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage together with its ancient cities, mountains, tea country and beautiful coastline.

Unlike a rushed island-wide pilgrimage, this itinerary deliberately provides two nights in Jaffna, keeps the arrival day light and avoids unnecessary sightseeing on the departure day.

This makes the journey particularly suitable for Indian families, pilgrimage groups, senior travellers and dedicated Ramayana travellers who want to explore a wider selection of Sri Lanka’s Ramayana traditions while maintaining a comfortable travel pace.

Detailed 11 Day Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour Itinerary

Arrival in Sri Lanka – Negombo

  • Your Grand Sri Lanka Ramayana journey begins with your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport.

Upon arrival, a Goali Tours representative will welcome you at the airport and assist you with your transfer to Negombo.

Negombo is conveniently located close to the international airport, making it an ideal first overnight stop after an international flight.

There is no scheduled sightseeing on arrival day. After checking into your hotel, take time to relax and recover from your journey.

If your flight arrives early and you feel comfortable, you may enjoy an optional Negombo beach sunset or a short walk around the hotel area.

    Overnight Stay: Negombo

Why this day is designed this way

Rather than beginning the Grand Ramayana Trail with a long transfer immediately after your international flight, the itinerary allows you to rest near the airport and begin the following day refreshed.

Negombo – Chilaw – Munneswaram – Manavari – Anuradhapura

After breakfast, begin your Ramayana pilgrimage and travel towards Chilaw.

Your first major spiritual stop is Munneswaram Temple, one of the important Shiva temples associated with the Ramayana tradition in Sri Lanka.

Continue to Manavari Temple, traditionally associated with Lord Rama and the first Shiva Lingam installed by him in Sri Lanka.

After completing the temple visits, continue towards Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient cities.

Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a compact late-afternoon orientation of the ancient city.

Possible heritage stops include Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya.

The sightseeing programme is intentionally kept compact so that you can enjoy the ancient city without making the day unnecessarily tiring.

Overnight Stay: Anuradhapura

Travel Experience

This day combines the first major Ramayana temples with a compact introduction to one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient cities.

Anuradhapura to Jaffna – Northern Sri Lanka

After breakfast, depart from Anuradhapura and travel towards Jaffna, the cultural heart of northern Sri Lanka.

Upon arrival in Jaffna, enjoy a relaxed city orientation.

Visit Jaffna Fort and discover the unique history and culture of the northern peninsula.

Continue to Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples in northern Sri Lanka.

Depending on timing, an optional exterior or photo stop at the Jaffna Public Library may be arranged.

You may also enjoy a local Jaffna ice cream experience before returning to your hotel.

The evening is intentionally kept free for rest following the northern transfer.

Overnight Stay: Jaffna

A Relaxed Northern Arrival

Rather than combining a full Anuradhapura sightseeing programme with an intensive Jaffna programme, this itinerary allows you to arrive in Jaffna comfortably and explore the city at a relaxed pace.

Jaffna Full Day – Northern Spiritual Circuit

After breakfast, enjoy a full day exploring the northern spiritual and cultural circuit.

Depending on weather conditions, ferry availability and group comfort, an optional excursion to Nainativu Island may be arranged.

Continue your pilgrimage with a visit to Naguleswaram Temple, one of the important Hindu pilgrimage sites in northern Sri Lanka.

Continue to Keerimalai, another important spiritual location in the Jaffna peninsula.

Depending on the day’s routing and local conditions, a Nilavarai Well or local cultural stop may also be included.

Return to Jaffna in the evening.

The evening is kept free for rest or a relaxed vegetarian dinner.

Overnight Stay: Jaffna

The Northern Spiritual Experience

Two nights in Jaffna allow you to explore the northern Ramayana and Hindu pilgrimage connections without trying to complete the entire circuit in a single rushed day.

Jaffna to Trincomalee – Koneswaram Temple

After breakfast, leave Jaffna and travel towards Trincomalee on Sri Lanka’s beautiful east coast.

As this is a longer transfer day, the sightseeing programme is intentionally focused.

Upon arrival in Trincomalee, visit the magnificent Koneswaram Temple, one of Sri Lanka’s most important Shiva temples and a major location associated with the wider Ramayana pilgrimage tradition.

Enjoy the spectacular coastal surroundings of Swami Rock and Lover’s Leap.

Depending on timing and group comfort, an optional visit to the Kanniya Hot Water Wells may be arranged.

After completing the day’s sightseeing, check into your hotel and relax.

Overnight Stay: Trincomalee

A Focused East Coast Experience

The itinerary focuses on Koneswaram and the surrounding area rather than adding too many attractions to a long transfer day, allowing the journey to remain comfortable.

Trincomalee – Dambulla / Sigiriya – Kandy

  • After breakfast, depart Trincomalee and travel towards Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.

Visit the magnificent Dambulla Cave Temple, an important cultural and religious landmark.

For physically fit travellers who prefer a more active experience, Sigiriya Rock Fortress may be selected as an alternative, subject to timing and the group’s preference.

Continue towards Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural heart.

Upon arrival, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Sri Lanka’s most important religious and cultural landmarks.

Enjoy a light orientation around Kandy Lake and the surrounding city.

If time permits, enjoy a short visit around Nuwara Eliya town or lake.

The day is intentionally not overloaded with attractions, allowing you to experience the principal Ramayana sites without rushing.

Nuwara Eliya – Divurumpola – Ella – Ravana Falls – Kataragama

After breakfast, leave the cool mountain climate of Nuwara Eliya and continue towards southern Sri Lanka.

Your first stop is Divurumpola Temple, traditionally associated with Sita’s Agni Pariksha.

Continue towards Ella and enjoy a scenic stop at the spectacular Ravana Falls.

For physically comfortable travellers, an optional visit to Ravana Cave may be arranged.

The cave experience is not recommended for every traveller and remains optional depending on physical ability, weather and local conditions.

Continue towards Kataragama.

Depending on arrival time and local religious schedules, an evening visit to Kataragama Temple may be arranged.

Overnight Stay: Kataragama

Flexible Activity Level

Keeping Ravana Cave optional allows families and senior travellers to experience the Ramayana route without being required to participate in a physically demanding activity.

Kataragama – Ussangoda – Rumassala – Galle – Bentota

After breakfast, continue your journey along Sri Lanka’s beautiful southern coastline.

If the Kataragama temple visit was not completed on Day 8, begin the day with the temple visit.

Continue towards the Galle region and visit Rumassala, associated with the traditional Sanjeevani episode involving Hanuman.

Continue to Sri Panchamukha Anjaneyar Temple in Colombo, subject to temple opening hours, access and route practicality.

After completing the day’s spiritual experiences, enjoy a short Colombo city orientation or shopping stop.

There is intentionally no long evening sightseeing programme, allowing you to relax before your departure.

Continue to your final hotel in Colombo or Negombo, depending on your international flight schedule.
